Celebrating 100 years of Lac Vert

The Hamlet of Lac Vert is celebrating 100 years in its current settlement.

It used to be located west of Highway 6 beside a small lake around half a mile away from the present site.

Treasurer of the Lac Vert Community Club Jennifer Bushby told northeastNOW there have actually been two moves in the community’s history.

“It was moved in 1917 closer to where the townsite is now. In 1923 it was moved to where it currently is.”

The Hamlet moved to its final location when the railroad was built in order for the town to thrive.

Over the years, the community started to really thrive. It had a post office, general store, doctor, two-grain elevators, a shoe repair store, a cafe, a laundry mat, and other amenities.

There was also an open-air skating rink with a Senior Hockey Team. They competed in the ‘Big Four’ league for the ‘Cook Cup’ which was donated by Bill and Bun Cook who played for the New York Rangers.

Despite the current community only having 19 homes, the people who live there rallied together to celebrate the milestone in conjunction with the Old Time Country Fair & BBQ.

Bushby said people registered from far and wide to see the Old Time Country Fair & BBQ.

“I would say there were probably 250 to 300 people at the fair. And then we had about 160 people for supper.”

The fair is the second largest event with the fall supper in October being the biggest.

The Lac Vert community club has seven members who volunteer to help bring events to the community despite financial limitations.

One of the events offered to raise money was a dessert auction and despite only having six baking items, they raised $440.

“It’s definitely a tight-knit community and everybody pitches in from far and wide and we are super blessed to have really amazing volunteers that just step up every time,” Bushby said.

Those who want to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Lac Vert can order a ‘keep your eye on the pie’ t-shirt or hat.
