Sylvania Rink gets much needed repairs

Jul 12, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The Sylvania Rink Board is coming together to keep a community staple functional for future generations.

A part of Sylvania’s history was made in the 1960s when the rink was first built and despite it burning down a year later, the community came together to build the current rink.

Treasurer of the Sylvania Rink Board Karen Smith told northeastNOW that with a well-loved building comes repairs.

“The most immediate repair needed was the roof, which is aged, worn, and beginning to mold in some spots.”

The five members of the board are working together to put forth fundraising efforts in the community to allow for the changes to happen.

A GoFundMe was started in the spring which has since closed but raised $5,100 towards the project as well as a raffle fundraiser held in the community.

As on June 30, the south side of the roof had the tin taken off and replaced with shingles. The board is hopeful that with community support they will be able to do the other side.

Smith explained they aren’t sure exactly how much damage there is to the existing building, but they’re already seeing how much pride the community has in ensuring the building is restored to its former glory.

“We are very fortunate to live in a community of great people who are always supportive of local events and projects like this,” said Smith. “Local contractors were used to help oversee the project and there were many volunteers who stepped up to help as well.”

She added with this being an all-hands-on-deck operation, the board isn’t stopping at just roof repairs.

“Besides paint and the remainder of the exterior work, repairs and upgrades to the interior are also needed. We would like to see the entire viewing area and kitchen be updated.”

The Board is also hoping to put the building to good use as there is presently a curling rink space that hasn’t been used in a number of years.
