Northern Sask. athletes ready to start the North American Indigenous Games

More than 500 athletes, coaches and team personnel from Saskatchewan are heading to Halifax for the North American Indigenous Games, and many from northern Saskatchewan are joining them.

Athletes aged 11-19 will compete in 16 events at venues in and around Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Dartmouth, Millbrook First Nation and Sipeke’katik. This year’s games were originally scheduled for 2020 before being cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“I am looking forward to the kids having an experience of a lifetime,” said Team Sask Chef de Mission Mike Tanton. “All of the hard work and dedication of volunteers, staff and support providing this opportunity for the young people is incredible!”

Among those participating are 14 athletes from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) and players from communities like Muskoday First Nation, Shoal Lake and Red Earth Cree Nations, Mistawasis First Nation, and Big River First Nation.

Members of the Battlefords United Football Club and the Prince Albert Minor Softball Association will also be making the trek to Nova Scotia.

Saskatchewan hopes to improve on its solid performance from the last NAIG in 2017 where they finished second with 166 medals.

The Games run from July 15 to 23.
