Melfort Mustangs training camp being held over weekend

Sep 8, 2023 | 2:00 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are holding their training camp this weekend.

Director of Marketing and Office Administration Hana Grace told northeastNOW there are 82 hopefuls participating this year.

“When they come in Friday night they’ll get their camp assignment. Then they go down to the dressing rooms to meet their teammates before the first session starts at 5:15 p.m.”

The camp starts on Friday and goes until 8:30 p.m. with players returning bright and early at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

Teams Red and Green kick off the camp with the first game on Friday night followed by Team Grey and Team Blue.

The Fall Camp Intersquad Game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Grace explains prospects won’t be the only ones on the ice as several veterans will also be taking part. This includes Leith Oalfson.

“They’re doing fitness testing but something that has stood out is (Oalfson’s) leadership. Leith has grabbed the reins and just ran with it.”

Also taking part are Wyatt Day, Zac Somers, Cameron Emigh, Ryan Duguay, Logan Belton, Jacon Hufty, James Venne, David Rouix, Aidan Hutchinson, and Ty Thornton.

The day after camp wraps up, the Mustangs will play the Nipawin Hawks in their first exhibition game. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.

Grace believes the Mustangs are in a great position with skilled players.

“We have a very strong group of senior players. If you have a strong group of seniors it trickles down. You need to have that leadership on and off the ice.”

The first game of the season, which also happens to be the home opener, is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
