BHP Team Jansen holds fifth annual Movember Hockey Classic

Nov 30, 2023 | 5:08 AM

A local BHP team recently held a ‘Movember Hockey Classic’ as part of their fundraising efforts for the annual campaign.

Team Jansen (from just southeast of Humboldt) held their fifth annual game at the Leroy Community Centre this past Thursday.

The contest pitted BHP Team Jansen integrated project team members and its site contractors against each other, as they raised awareness around the importance of men’s health, specifically when it comes to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

“It’s just about us coming together as one project team rallying around all of the causes that Movember supports, and aimed at the challenges and issues that that men are faced with,” explained Operations NPI Manager for BHP and Team Jansen Captain, Maury Simoneau.

Prior to Thursday’s match, the series was even at two, as the site contractors then won 10-6 to break the tie.

The annual event always goes to a surrounding community and includes a silent auction, as well as door prizes, along with free smokies for the kids.

“It’s turned out to be a staple of our campaign year after year and just a really positive event for not only the project but for the town of Leroy,” added Simoneau.

“It’s so great to see a local community come out and watch and support some average to maybe above average hockey players and have some fun rallying around what Movember supports and the causes that that they fund, in and around men’s health and men’s health awareness.”

While the game itself only raises a couple of thousand dollars each year, Team Jansen in total, receives a lot more funds than that, throughout the rest of the month.

Last year, they were the highest fundraising BHP team worldwide, raising $70,925. Currently, this time around, they are sitting just shy of their $80,000 goal, with a couple of days in November still to come.

“I think we’re gonna get really close to 80k as a team, which is fantastic, we’ll work as hard as we can to get to 80k and if we fall a little short, it’s not due to a lack of effort. Last year, we raised just north of 70,000 bucks, and we’ve already surpassed that, so that’s a success,” Simoneau told northeastNOW.

“Amongst all of the BHP global Movember teams, we were the number one top global team last year, and I suspect that we’ll be able to defend our title and remain the top global team this year as well.

Simoneau believes about 100 per cent of donations come directly from people within Saskatchewan, which will all go directly to the Movember Foundation.

That foundation funds prostate and testicular cancer research, initiatives that help people dealing with the diseases have a higher quality of life, and education about men’s suicide awareness.
