Mustangs push win streak to five, hand Terriers eight consecutive loss

The Melfort Mustangs made their first and only trip of the season to Yorkton on Saturday night and walked away with a 4-3 win.

The victory pushed the Mustangs’ winning streak to five, while in turn handing the Terriers their eighth consecutive loss.

Melfort has also now leapfrogged into second place in the SJHL standings, a single point ahead of both the Humboldt Broncos and the Battlefords North Stars.

For the Stangs, the 4-3 triumph was maybe a little more stressful than it had to be, as the club held two separate three-goal leads before the game got tight late.

At one point the Blue and Green were up 3-0, spoiling the hometown crowd’s chances at chucking their teddies for the Terriers Teddy Bear Toss, until halfway through the game.

The organizations ultimately avoided a near third-period collapse, however, collecting the victory, and the season series win as well, three games to two.

The two groups had previous meetings in Melfort (twice), Warman (Showcase), and Kamsack (neutral-site).

The Mustangs began the contest with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, courtesy of Chase Friedt-Mohr opening the scoring and Nolan Henderson adding on with just a second left, on the powerplay.

Then, Hudson Norris made it 3-0 in the second, before Yorkton finally got on the board with their Teddy Bear Toss goal by Brett Butz.

Melfort regained their three-goal lead early in the third thanks to Logan Belton on the man advantage before the Terriers scored two unanswered and cut the lead to one with five minutes to go.

The Stangs were able to withstand nearly four straight minutes of penalty killing, a short bit of which was 5-3, as well as a 6-on-5 empty net try by their opposition during the final frame, as they hung on just enough to claim the two points.

The Blue and Green, now 20-9-2 on the year, will next suit up on Tuesday when they travel to Melville for the final time of the season to face the Millionaires.

The meeting will be the third of four between the two teams and begin the final week of SJHL hockey before the New Year.
