Ziola’s first wins it for the Mustangs for their sixth straight win

Tristin Ziola got his first career SJHL goal on Tuesday night, which proved to be the game-winner, as the Melfort Mustangs took down the Melville Millionaires, 4-2.

The Tisdale Trojan call-up was an affiliate player on the night, alongside his teammate Jaxon Kehrig, as the two helped their temporary club secure its sixth consecutive victory.

“Those guys are two young guys, and it’s awesome to have them on our list, they come every game and they work hard, and you could see that tonight, which they got rewarded for, so that’s awesome,” said assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“We’re on a six-game heater here, which is awesome, the boys are going, they’re all gelling, they’re all excited, so that’s good and we got two more to go here.”

Kehrig had an assist on the Ziola goal, for his second point in just his second game in a Mustang uniform.

As for Melfort, they got their first points against the Millionaires this season, as the third time proved to be a charm.

Melville had previously won the first two matchups of the season.

“They play a good D zone game, it’s very frustrating if you can’t score early, but we had a good first and we got on the board, which was awesome,” Scherger added.

“Our game plan was to have a quick start, have a heavy start with energy and all four lines plus our D came out and did that.”

The contest also marked the first game of his Stangs’ career for Clay Sleeva, who was recently acquired from the Yorkton Terriers.

He had an assist during the matchup, on his club’s second goal, as the team never trailed once during the game.

“With Sleeva coming in, he’s an unreal character guy, he’s a former captain, we brought him in for a reason and that’s to be a leader,” Scherger told northeastNOW. “He shows why he leads out there on the ice and that’s because he works so hard.”

The Mustangs are now 21-9-2 on the year, as they remain second in the SJHL standings.

They are also 3 and 0 in Teddy Bear Toss games this season and send the Mills home for their holiday break on a sour note.

Melfort has just two games remaining for themselves in the 2023 calendar year, as they will play a home-and-home this weekend against their rival Nipawin Hawks.
