Melfort council approves financial statement as budget approaches

The City of Melfort is inching closer to compiling its upcoming budget.

City council has approved the financial statement for last year, which was delayed after the departure of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Trevor Wowk last month.

Mayor Glenn George told northeastNOW administration worked on various budget requests in the interim.

George said the city will have what is hoped to be the final negotiations with their union this coming week.

“That’s something that we need for our budget, and we also need this financial statement which we got now,” George said. “Because of the change [in] CFO’s, we’re behind schedule, let’s put it that way.”

Council wrote a letter of support to the community of Aberdeen as they seek to pressure the provincial government to install passing lanes on Highway 41 near Aberdeen.

“They’ve had another death at that corner, and it’s getting to be a really busy highway, and so we did send a letter of support,” George explained.

He believes Melfort will likely one day need passing lanes along that highway as well, so that was another reason to send the letter supporting Aberdeen’s request.

The city has also approved the sale of five acres of land to an undisclosed numbered company that will be building a cardlock and bulk fuel site on Highway 41 just south of Melfort.
