Mustangs remain winless against Hawks, have perfect month and six-game win streak snapped

Dec 16, 2023 | 5:32 PM

The Melfort Mustangs kryptonite this season seems to be the Nipawin Hawks.

The Mustangs’ archrivals are still the only team Melfort has yet to beat this season, as the Hawks pulled out a 5-4 overtime win on Friday night.

That means that Nipawin is now 3 and 0 this year when the two teams have matched up.

“I don’t know what’s been going on this year,” explained Stangs’ captain, Leith Olafson. “They’ve been playing good against us and their goalies have been playing good, so I think tomorrow we just got to go in there and work a little bit harder and be a little more disciplined and get some shots on net and grind a win out there in the Cage.”

The two clubs will now shift to the Cage on Saturday night, for the fourth of six matchups this season, the second of the home-and-home set, and the final contest before the Christmas break.

According to Olafson, the Blue and Green need to get back into a better mental state and end on a positive note to take into 2024.

“I think we just kind of slipped, it’s getting close to Christmas so I think our mental focus slipped a little bit and we took a few uncalled-for penalties and that kind of cost us the game,” he told northeastNOW.

“It’ll be a good one to get if we get there tonight, it’ll be good going into the break on a high note so we can come back after Christmas and be ready to go and keep this roll going.”

The Mustangs will now not only try to recover from having their undefeated month of December come to an end, but also rebound from having their six-game win streak snapped.

If Melfort can take any comfort in their losses to their Sherwood Division foes, it is that all three have been by just a single goal, which means they had a legitimate chance of winning, every single time.

Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena, with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
