Melfort Fire Department responded to over 100 calls in 2023

The Melfort Fire Department has released its year-end statistics.

The department received 113 calls in 2023, with the final two taking place within minutes of each other on Dec. 29.

Deputy Chief Doug Walsh told northeastNOW the number of calls last year was right around average.

“I think it’s into that 100-120 (call) range, usually,” Walsh explained.

He said he hasn’t had a chance to go through the numbers in detail yet.

The turn of the calendar is a good reminder to check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries, to make sure they’re still working. Walsh added it’s important to also make sure the detectors themselves haven’t expired.

“Lots of the carbon monoxide detectors have an expiry date on them, same as your smoke detectors, to replace by a certain date” Walsh said.

The department also continues to look for new members. They held an informational session at the Fire Hall in December.

“We’ve started a recruitment program and we’ve got some candidates going through that process right now,” Walsh explained.

He noted they will always keep trying to add new members, and the next recruitment will likely take place in the spring or fall.
