Mustangs head to Wilcox for lone game in two-week stretch

Jan 25, 2024 | 3:03 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will head to Wilcox late Thursday night, as they’re set to face the Notre Dame Hounds for the fifth and final time this season.

The weekday action is the lone game for Melfort in roughly a two-week stretch, as the league will take off five days for the SJHL/MJHL Showcase.

“We got to work hard, you know we gotta get back to our game, tough loss on Saturday and we all want to get in a win before we go to break here, so big game tomorrow,” said Mustangs forward Ryan Duguay.

“Obviously, you want to go into a long break like that on a winning note, so that’s what we’re going to aim for and we’re going to do our best to get it.”

Melfort has won all four games against the Hounds this season, by a combined score of 23-8, but the Mustangs are just 3-2-1 this month, after a perfect 8 and 0 December, while Notre Dame has won their last three.

The Stangs will hope to use the open ice to their advantage after they scored just twice in two games last weekend in Estevan.

“We’re a fast team so we like the open ice, we can use our speed, use our feet, and beat their D-men like that to create some offence that way,” Duguay added.

Duguay returned to the club’s lineup last week, after spending roughly two months away due to injury.

While he had quite a bit of rust to shake off, he’s hoping that’s all in the past and he can get back to it tonight.

“I hope so, it wasn’t my best this weekend but we’re hoping to get better every day and a good week of practice hopefully will get me there,” Duguay told northeastNOW.

Duguay is one of six Blue and Green players who will be heading to Winnipeg for the SJ/MJ Showcase for a couple of days.

His primary focus at the moment is two points, however, as he knows he and his teammates can’t look ahead.

“I think we’re just gonna focus on this game on Thursday, we’ve been saying playing in the now, we got a task in hand before we get to have fun with that showcase, so we’re gonna focus on that,” explained Duguay.

The Suncrest College pregame show will begin at 7:45 p.m. on 105 CJVR, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m. from the Duncan McNeill Arena.
