Mustangs conclude season-long road trip with dramatic win over Red Wings

The Melfort Mustangs won a wild one on Tuesday night, as they remained perfect against the Weyburn Red Wings this season.

It was the first trip to Crescent Point Place for the Stangs this year, and it’s safe to say the game got off to a dramatic start, as the two teams combined for eight first-period goals.

“Two points is big and to come out with the win, at times it’s very ugly and a bit sloppy, but it’s good to come out on top and we got the two points,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“It seemed like every shot was going in and it was a battle of who was gonna get the next goal, so we got into the room and said, hey, let’s clean up the D zone a bit.”

Both clubs did clean it up for about 20 minutes, as no goals were scored in the second period except for a Mustangs’ one which was disallowed.

It then got tense again in the final frame, as Weyburn cut a two-goal Melfort lead down to one twice, something they did four times on the night, as the Red Wings were so close to tying it with 10 seconds to go before time eventually expired.

“I think nerves got to our guys a bit, we just told them to do the simple things, chip pucks out and get it in because we’re up by one goal. I think the nerves got to them the best, but we survived,” Scherger added.

Kristian Coombs got his first start since Dec. 15 on the night, as he showed some rust early, before barring down for his team late.

Scherger told northeastNOW that was a bit expected from him, and while giving up five goals isn’t great, at least his club proved they can score six if they need to.

“He hasn’t played in a long time and for a guy to come in, he battled, the start wasn’t what he wanted, but he battled all game and he got the win,” Scherger said.

“We got a lot of scoring touch on our team, you never want to give up five goals, that’s never nice, but that was good for the offence.”

With the victory, the Blue and Green are now winners of three straight and concluded their season-long six-game road trip with a 4 and 2 mark.
