Mustangs suffer weekend sweep to Broncos

The Melfort Mustangs had a tough two games against the Humboldt Broncos this weekend, as they suffered the home-and-home sweep.

Their rivals outplayed them for nearly 100 of the 120 minutes, as Melfort started late both nights and were just unable to dig themselves out of early holes.

“Can’t have a slow start, yesterday it was 4-1 after one, and I think it was three or 4-1 after one today so that just can’t happen,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“You never want to have a push late in the third, you want to have it the whole full 60 minutes, so just not good enough.”

Through a period and a half of play, the Mustangs once again saw themselves trailing 4-1.

After a 5-1 defeat on Friday at home, the Stangs refused to roll over and accept defeat again, making it a game late.

The Blue and Green scored twice late in the second to make it a one-goal game heading into the final frame, but unfortunately, Landon Stromme scored two late-period empty netters to seal it 6-4 in favour of Humboldt.

With the victory, the Broncos have now won the season series 4-2 and leapfrogged the Mustangs for third place in the SJHL standings.

“Now it’s grind time, they jumped ahead of us, we’re in fourth and now we look ahead of us. We got Flin Flon on Wednesday, that’s a big game and then we got Estevan and Weyburn, so it’s a big week coming up and we got to prepare for that,” Scherger added.

“We got to get in deep, start those games on time, and support each other on the ice.”

The bright spot for Melfort is that James Venne got a bit of a rest, after getting pulled just 10 minutes into the game, with no help in front of him.

Kristian Coombs came in, in relief, stopping 18 of the 19 shots he faced.

“Good for him, he comes in every once in a while and goes in there cold and he stood on his head and battled hard,” Scherger told northeastNOW.
