Back in the Win Column

Mustangs top line combines for 12 points in victory over Bruins

The Melfort Mustangs got back in the win column on Friday night, with a 6-4 victory over the Estevan Bruins.

After three straight losses, the Mustangs were happy to end that slide, as they now take a 3-2 season series lead on the Bruins.

“That was a big win, obviously ending a three games skid and getting the first on the road was huge. The first and second periods were a little slow, but everyone dug deep and we were short-staffed, so proud of the guys for getting it done,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

The game seemed like the first taste of playoff hockey for Melfort this year, as rotations were tight, the club was down with injuries, and the group’s stars shined.

Five of the six goals were scored by the Stang’s top forward line of Zac Somers, Clay Sleeva, and Aidyn Hutchinson, as the trio combined for 12 points.

Each put up four points, as Hutchinson had a goal and three helpers, while Sleeva and Somers both had a pair of goals and assists.

“Those guys are the top dogs for a reason and it showed tonight. Their chemistry is unreal right now and everything’s going the flow right now,” Scherger added.

“The guys that were going, they put everything on the line, played simple, chip pucks out and put it in, so it’s good to get the win.”

Now, the Blue and Green will head to Weyburn, in hopes of accomplishing the season sweep.

All three prior games have been won by just a single goal, as another tough contest is on the schedule.

“Tonight’s another big one, Weyburn is no pushover, they’re a good team, so we got to get a good rest and do the same thing’s as Friday, we got to be heavy, physical, play a simple game and get another road win,” Scherger told northeastNOW.

The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
