The Nipawin Hawks dropped a 4-3 decision to the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox on Thursday in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

The loss keeps the Hawks four points out of the final SJHL playoff spot with nine games remaining.

Nipawin did have some positive moments in the loss including snapping their 0/34 power-play drought with a pair of goals on the man advantage and the club added their 13th shorthanded goal of the season, but Head Coach Tad Kozun said not being able to produce even-strength cost the team two points.

“When you at the score with two powerplay goals and a shorthanded goal we have to find a way to generate something five-on-five because you can’t rely on that every game,” he said on the postgame show. “I thought we had some good chances, but we have to find a way to find the back of the net.”

Alex Bernauer scored his 10th goal of the season while Nipawin was on a powerplay, and so did Braeden Jockims, who has 11 goals. Maguire Ratzlaff scored his 13th goal of the season and third shorthanded.

Damon Cunningham suffered the loss making 26 stops, Spencer Borsos made 35 saves in the victory.

Nipawin will travel to Estevan on Friday to close their season series with the Bruins. Kozun said the staff will regroup and prepare for the Bruins after the heartbreaking defeat.

“This one really, really stings, the battle back was there. We have to get on the bus, get to the hotel, and we have to get ready for tomorrow because it’s another matchup,” he said.

Estevan sits eight points up on the Hawks tied for sixth with Kindersley.

Faceoff at Affinity Place is at 7 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey starts at 6:45 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
