Mustangs dominate Millionaires with 7-0 blowout win

The Melfort Mustangs left nothing to chance on Friday night, dominating their opponents at every stop along the way.

Melfort walked away with a commanding 7-0 blowout win over the Melville Millionaires, their last matchup of the year, tying the season series at two in the process.

“All our lines were going, we just had lots of energy right from the start, we had a week off, so I think everyone was excited to play so that helped a lot,” explained captain Leith Olafson.

“Melville is close to us in the standings in a way, so we might possibly match up with them in the playoffs, so it’s good to start beating them down right now.”

The game was tight through the first 30 minutes of play, as the Mustangs only held a 1-0 lead through the first half.

A barrage of second-period goals, which included four in just over four minutes, really sealed it though.

More excellent play from their netminder James Venne, who stopped all 22 shots he faced, recording his league-tying fourth shutout in the process, also helped a lot, as the team has now won three in a row.

“I think we just keep doing what we’ve been doing, playing hard, getting pucks in, and getting pucks on net because I think that’s been our strongest attribute the last few games,” Olafson added.

With the victory, the Blue and Green also managed to climb the standings, leapfrogging over the Humboldt Broncos for third place in the league, while also gaining two points on second-place Battlefords, as they now trail the North Stars by just three points.

Friday night’s contests had other reasons to celebrate as well, as Leith Olafson was honoured as the club’s RBC Community Ambassador.

“It was awesome, I’ve been in this community for three years, so it’s it’s great to be able to give back in such a way and it’s just awesome to be recognized like that,” he told northeastNOW.

The Mustangs will next play on Wednesday, another game on home ice, when the Estevan Bruins travel to the Northern Lights Palace for the sixth and final meeting between the two clubs.

As it stands right now, Melfort is leading that season series three games to two.
