Carrot River wrestlers off to provincials, hosting regionals in 2025

Carrot River High School students came up big this past weekend at the regional wrestling championships in Rosetown.

In total, seven wrestlers qualified for provincials during the championships, of which the girls won the 3A Division (typically schools with less than 200 students).

Meanwhile, two boys also qualified as individuals, for the upcoming provincial championships in Saskatoon this weekend. Six are planning to attend.

“I was very proud of them,” coach Kevin Duchscherer told northeastNOW. “We’ve been working all year to prepare for this, so we’re gonna go out there and try ourselves against the Regina and Saskatoon regions as well and hope that we’re able to compete at that level.”

The top four in each weight class move on to provincials from the regional tournament.

This means that each wrestler is fighting for their own spot, as well as trying to earn collective points as a group.

“We train with the mentality of a team; we’re constantly trying to work on supporting each other’s growth and push each other to be better all the time,” Duchschrer added.

“That camaraderie and everything that we build as a team, when it comes down to the matches themselves, every person has to step out there and do their job alone. The individuals get an opportunity to compete for themselves, but they’re also trying to do the best they can and support their team members.”

Just six years ago, Carrot River only had three wrestlers in total, but now they have 15, eight of which are girls along with seven boys.

That’s a significant increase for a smaller northeast town.

“People here are starting to pay more attention to the sport and they’re finding it’s a sport they’re really beginning to enjoy and and I really think it’s because of the uniqueness of being able to go out as as themselves, as well as being on a team. I think that combination is really appealing to a lot of our kids,” explained Duchsherer.

The increase has been noticed, along with a new school, which is a reason why they will be hosting the regional tournament in 2025.

The school has only won a provincial medal once, back in 2018, but has been chasing that feeling again, ever since then.

“There are several schools that we’re competing against, so to come out on top, it’s a pride thing for us for sure,” Duchsherer said. “We’re just excited all around at the opportunity to be able to host an event like that and for our kids to be able to compete at home.”
