NESD receives approval to expand Melfort’s Maude Burke School

The Northeast School Division (NESD) is digging into its reserves to add either two portable classrooms or construct news ones at Maude Burke School.

The school opened in 2002, but over the last two years has had issues with crowding. The pre-kindergarten program at Maude Burke was even relocated to Reynolds Central School, and the library cut in half to add additional classroom space.

The Ministry of Education approved $800,000 to be spent from the NESD’s accumulated surplus fund. Board Chair Luke Perkins said the expansion is needed as soon as possible.

“That’s an immediate need, they need the room right now,” Perkins said.
