Imitation firearms treated the same as real guns: RCMP officer

Jul 25, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A local officer says while fake firearms can’t be used to fire bullets, officers are trained to treat the device based on how it looks; like a real weapon.

“In extension it’s the same thing,” Cpl. Rob King, a media relations officer with F Division, said. “Just because it can’t be used as a firearm it doesn’t matter. To the person it’s being pointed at it’s the same amount of trauma.”

Even with imitations such as toys or models that can’t shoot, Cpl. Rob King told northeastNOW charges are still the same if anyone tries to make an imitation look like a real firearm.

The warning comes after a 15-year-old faces nine charges after possessing an imitation firearm at the Melfort Exhbition last Friday. He now faces nine charges, which includes pointing and possessing a firearm while prohibited.
