A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to 18 months on probation with conditions in connection with a knife assault in Melfort earlier this year.

The incident took place March 8 when the youth, who was 14 years old at the time, threatened a peer with a knife at Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC). The victim suffered minor injuries.

Some of the conditions for the youth’s probation includes no contact with the victim outside of school, a written apology, no possession of weapons except for eating or preparing food, a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and 40 hours of community service work. In his ruling, Provincial Court Judge Stan Loewen said he thought the youth had a positive future but needs a change of attitude.

The Crown got nearly everything it asked for in the sentence, although Prosecutor Darren Howarth suggested three months of deferred custody and nine months probation in the case.
