Christmas Castle opening at historic post office

Dec 10, 2018 | 11:00 AM

Melfort’s Christmas castle at the historic post office is set to open tonight.

The community project that was the vision of a local doctor has been underway since last Christmas.

Dr. Adeyemi Laosebikan said he came up with the idea to turn the post office building into a Christmas castle last year. He said the thought came to him while he drove down Main Street during the holidays and noticed how quiet downtown was.

“I thought we could do something in the post office to at least bring some crowd into Melfort and bring life to Main Street,” Laosebikan said.

There are displays of Christmas villages, Christmas trees, trains, arts and crafts and a life size nativity scene thanks to numerous groups and volunteers from around the community that has worked with Laosebikan.

There will also be a spot for live music and the walkthrough ends with apple cider and hot chocolate.

Community Development Manager Brent Lutz said the city jumped on board with idea.

“This is just one more example of a great use of the historic post office downtown and also brings life to the downtown area and brings people to Melfort,” Lutz said. “We’ve been trying to help make this happen as much as we can.”

The Christmas castle is open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night until Dec. 23 and is free of charge.

Donations are accepted with all funds donated to the North Central Health Care Foundation.
