New development on hold pending tabled motion on lot sizes

Construction was halted on a proposed new development in the Creekside Acres neighborhood of Melfort.

A developer would like to take five, currently empty lots in the neighborhood on the east side of Melfort, and subdivide them into 10 lots for development. At the City of Melfort’s regular council meeting on Monday, Dec 10, a public hearing was held to allow members of the community to voice their opinion. About seven members from the Creekside Acres community attended, including Lydia Steffen. She said having the lots subdivided would change the neighbourhood’s atmosphere — a aspect she said was promised to purchasers.

“When we purchased the lots at Creekside Acres we were promised acreage living, so they are larger than city lots, so any subdivision would just change that vision that we were promised,” Steffen said.

She added that the community is “optimistic that they will come to a resolution.”

Mayor Rick Lang said the subdivision would give the City of Melfort something they don’t currently have.

“The developer wishes to subdivide those five lots into 10 lots.” Lang told northeastNOW. “Which will still be a substantial size. I think they are going to be subdivided into half-acre lots, and there are no such thing as half-acre lots in the City of Melfort’s inventory. No lots are available that are that large, but this is a different type of subdivision. So, the developer, to create more interest potentially, wanted to divide those lots into 10 lots.”

Lang and council decided to table the motion for the time being, giving both sides a bit more time to look into the situation.

“We’re hearing about it pretty much for the first time tonight, so we need time to consider that, so that’s why we tabled the motion,” Lang said.

There has been no action on the lots in regards to a purchaser since the development of that subdivision. A second and third reading will be held at another meeting.
