The city of Melfort is mourning the loss of a former councillor and mayor.

Jack Eisner has died at the age of 89.

Eisner served on council and was mayor from 1967 to 1970.

Current mayor Rick Lang said Eisner meant a lot to Melfort.

“He put a lot into making this community move forward, and we were grateful for his efforts, but sad at the same time,” said Lang. “Certainly all of our sympathies go out to his family.”

Lang said Eisner was always looking out for the best things for the community.

“We all recognized that that was a special individual because not everybody can take that on and carry forward with it,” said Lang.

“Jack did identify some things he wanted to see with respect to progress in Melfort and he stepped forward and took the reins, and by that I mean he put his name forward to run for mayor in the community, he won, and that enabled him to do things that a normal person doesn’t get to do. So certainly [Eisner] put a good portion of his thoughts and his life into making the city of Melfort a great place to live.”

Eisner moved to Melfort in the 1950’s after finishing law school, later being named as a Queen’s Counsel.

He was heavily involved in the community and was also an excellent athlete who was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame, and served as president of the Saskatchewan Golf Association.

Funeral services for Mr. Eisner will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melfort.
