1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Sep 11, 2018 | 12:20 PM

Families are invited to join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Melfort Public Library.

This is an established non-profit program throughout the U.S., Alberta, and Ontario.

We are the first library in Saskatchewan to offer this program! The program encourages parents to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1000 book goal in 3 years and provide their children essential literacy skills.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading together from an early age can close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with kids promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is available to families with kids between 0 – 5 years, up until they start kindergarten. Each child enrolling will be given a book bag and a bookmark.

These have been sponsored through our local Rotary club, who is partnering with us to provide this program.

Thank you so much! You will keep track of the books you read, and receive incentives along the way for every 100 books read.

We’re very excited to launch this program! Registration is now open!
