National fiddle champion raises funds across Saskatchewan

Canadian fiddle phenom Scott Woods ‘flipped’ into Melfort as part of his band’s “Old Time Christmas” tour.

The winner of numerous national awards – including Canadian Fiddler Entertainer of the Year and three straight Novelty Fiddle Championship honours – performed at the United Church Friday night.

All money raised from the tour is to be donated to the United Church Missionary Fund (UCMF), as Woods appreciates giving back.

“It’s a real blessing to be able to travel and play the music that we love and help those service clubs, community organizations, churches and charities along the way,” he said.

Woods began raising money for the UCMF in 2003 following the death of his father. But when Woods’ mother took part in a mission trip, he admitted he wasn’t ready for the relocation and turned to music.

UCMF volunteer Gwendolyn Mills-Wood said Woods has been a key contributor to their organization over the past 12 years.

“It’s a mission to help those who need help, not just in Canada, it’s overseas as well. We’ve been fortunate Woods has come forward,” she said.

The organization expected to raise “several thousand dollars” from the tour.

Woods heads to Lashburn Sunday before the tour ventures into Alberta.
