Window installation begins in historic Melfort building

The window replacement project at the historic post office in Melfort is officially underway.

Last month contractors were able to finish installing about a half-dozen of the installations before the extremely cold temperatures forced them to put their work on hold, according to community development manager Brent Lutz.

“With some of the frigid weather that we’ve been experiencing it’s delayed the project a bit,” Lutz said. “We’re hopeful that they’ll get back as soon as we get to more seasonable temperatures, and carry on with the installation.”

Lutz said the windows that have been installed look great, the fit is nice, and they have stopped the cold drafts in the areas where they have been installed.

“You can tell right away now that there’s no drafts as there were with the old windows,”said Lutz.

“It’s going to improve the comfort of the building considerably, and of course the appearance, they look great.” _{-Brent Lutz}

Despite the cold weather delay, Lutz hopes the project will still be complete by March 31.

Lutz said previously the window replacement project could also help lure interest in the building, which has been used for special events and functions.

Those events will continue while the city looks for a long-term use for the building at the corner of Main St. and MacLeod Ave. E.

The former post office was built between 1911 and 1912. A study completed in 2012 recommended a conservation project begin to ensure the deterioration of the building is kept in check until the completion of a full renovation.

The assessment also concluded the building is in reasonably good condition considering its age.
