Colin Schmidt scores four, Mustangs down Bombers

Feb 10, 2019 | 12:08 PM

It took them until Feb. 9, but the Melfort Mustangs have finally gotten their first road win of the 2019 calendar year.

Colin Schmidt led the way in the Saturday night contest as the Mustangs took an 8-4 win in Flin Flon against their rival Bombers.

It started off a bit shaky for the Mustangs as Daylan Marchi opened the scoring for the Bombers. Melfort responded 30 seconds later, courtesy of Jake Hobson and just like that it was 1-1, just 2:32 into the game. Donanvan Houle and Nate Hooper scored for Flin Flon before the 10-minute mark to give the Bombers a 3-1 lead. Head Coach Trevor Blevins said at that point, the Mustangs were fine.

“It was a pretty character win,” Blevins told northeastNOW. “Honestly, it was shot blocks and paying the price. When it was 3-1, we said on the bench, we’re ok, we need the next one. That was huge when we made it 3-2, got our momentum. The effort and the character not to shut down in a tough night, tough building. They were coming at us. What an effort through the lineup tonight.”

The Mustangs got that 3-2 goal from Colin Schmidt when he notched his first goal of the evening and brought the Mustangs into the first intermission down just one goal.

The second period was Melforts for the taking. Schmidt scored once again at the two-minute mark of the period, and then again at the 10-minute mark, giving the Mustangs the 4-3 lead. Alex Rondeau got in on the offense as he got a great pass from Justin Ball on a shorthanded 2-on-1 to make it 5-3 as the Mustangs started to pull away with a 5-3 lead after two.

Schmidt scored once again two minutes into the third, giving Melfort the 6-3 lead. Caleb Moretz scored for the Bombers to make it 6-4, but that is as close as it would get. George King and Zach Anderson scored for the Mustangs to extend things to 8-4. Blevins said it wasn’t only a huge game from Colin Schmidt (four goals), and George King (one goal, two assists), but everyone.

“It’s unreal actually,” Blevins said. “Colin Schmidt was amazing tonight, so was King. Everybody was on it tonight. You score eight against Flin Flon, you need a team effort.”

The Mustangs move to 30-15-4-0, and sit all alone in fifth place when it comes to playoff positioning. Next game action for the Mustangs is Wednesday, Feb. 13 as they host the Kindersley Klippers.
