Curling Club Provincials wrap up in Melfort

Mar 26, 2019 | 11:53 AM

The 2019 Curling Club Provincial Championships have wrapped up at the Melfort Curling Club.

The tournament began on Friday, March 22 with 12 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams.

Teams from clubs across the province played their hearts out all weekend, which led to some interesting scenarios in pool B on the men’s side. A total of four teams were tied atop the pool with a 3-2 record after the round robin. That led to two tie-breakers needing to be played. Melfort’s Team Desaulniers was one of those four teams and won the first tiebreaker over Team Hay of Martensville 8-2 on Sunday. Melfort’s rink then beat Team Flasch of North Battleford 8-4 on Sunday as well. That set up a semifinal with Team Grindheim of Saskatoon on Monday morning. Team Desaulnier ended up coming away with the 8-1 win, setting up somewhat of a local final with Team Gaudreau of Humboldt.

In Monday afternoon’s final, the Humboldt rink ended up with the 7-3 win. Melfort’s skip, Todd Desaulniers said even though they lost in the final, the weekend was a success.

“If someone would have told us ‘You’re going to be in the provincial final’ I would’ve said ‘Yeah you’re joking.’ The guys all played well, we played our hearts out, and it was just a lot of games in the weekend,” Desaulniers said.

The final was Team Desaulniers fifth game in 24 hours, and ninth over the four-day tournament.

As for Team Gaudreau, it was their third trip as a team to the final of the tournament, but first win. Skip Aaron Gaudreau said they’re on cloud nine.

“It’s a dream come true for all of us,” Gaudreau said. “The boys played well, and my hat goes off to the local team. I feel for them, but third time’s the charm I guess.”

Gaudreau added that the experience of a final helped their group come through.

“Being there twice made a difference,” he said. “We played a little more relaxed, a little more loose and when the boys are playing well, I don’t have to make very difficult shots.”

On the women’s side of the tournament, things were a little less complicated after the round robin. Three teams were tied at 3-1 in pool B, leading to just one tiebreaker. That featured Team McMillan and Team Wyatt, with Team McMillan of Saskatoon coming out with the win. That brought with it a matchup with the 5-0 Team Tracey out of Weyburn. Team Tracey came away with the 6-1 win, setting up a final with Team Yachiw out of Saskatoon. Team Yachiw was 3-1 in pool B, and beat Team Montgomery of Moose Jaw in the semi-final 10-1.

The final on Monday morning ended with a 5-3 win for the Weyburn rink skipped by Danette Tracey after a missed hit for two in the sixth by Team Yachiw put Team Tracey up for good. Tracey and her team went undefeated through the whole tournament and she said they made shots when they needed to.

“I knew it was going to be a close game, so we had to make sure we stayed tight with our shots,” Tracey said. “We were a little loose, but in the last four ends we kind of sharpened up and we managed to catch the winning side.”

The Melfort women’s team, skipped by Kerrie DeGooijer went 1-4 in round robin play, but did not make the playoffs.

Each winning rink will head to the National Curling Club Championships next season.
