Humboldt's History

Sixty years’ worth of stories shared at Humboldt Museum

May 7, 2019 | 5:02 PM

Humboldt and District Museum and Gallery is attaching context to its collection of artifacts and photographs.

Stories of Humboldt, a series of exhibits hosted by the museum, tells 11 new stories throughout the city’s upbringing from 1909 to the ’60s.

Catherine Harrison, cultural programmer for the museum, told northeastNOW the idea of Stories of Humboldt is to bring more life and connect meaning to the objects the museum has in its collection.

“Traditionally, museums are set up like a diorama,” Harrison said. “You’d look at a dining room or kitchen setup in a certain era, but sometimes the stories aren’t necessarily there, which is what gives the things life. What we want to do is connect stories and people to the objects and photographs we have in our collection; to really give those objects life and meaning so they can learn about our fantastic history here in Humboldt and make it a little easier to understand to appreciate.”

Some of the artifacts, photographs, and stories include the hat maker who opened the town’s millinery shop, the von Trapp family’s concert and visit to Humboldt, and the story of Bruiser’s Department Store which Harrison said some residents still remember vividly.

Harrison encourages residents to come by the museum to listen and share their stories of Humboldt’s history, as she said they want to continue collecting stories.

Stories of Humboldt will be on display on the main floor of the museum’s building on Main Street until the end of June.
