Melfort kicks off Recreation and Parks month

Jun 6, 2019 | 2:01 PM

Nearly hundreds of children, parents, and spectators soaked up the sun at the Spruce Haven Recreation Area June 5, as the City of Melfort kicked off its Recreation and Parks month.

The open house was held at the Melfort Skatepark with a barbecue and live skateboarding demonstrations, as Pool Manager Shannon Marshall said it’s one of the busier facilities that can show what the city has to offer.

“This is just about getting people out in the community and enjoying the green spaces and what our community has to offer them,” Marshall said. “June is a perfect month to do so.”

Marshall mentioned baseball, basketball, disc golf, pickleball, tennis, and swimming in the wave pool as other activities Melfort’s Recreation and Parks can offer, on top of the skatepark that opened in the summer of 2018.

The Melfort Skatepark is one of the completed additions to the Spruce Have Recreation Area, and there are others in progress, such as a splashpark, new playground, and soccer pitches. Marshall said the city is seeing good progress on the projects, but there are no promised opening dates until they are complete.

“We’re just going to focus on these ones right now,” she said. “We do have some other plans under work, but we just haven’t finalized the space those for the upcoming years. It’s going to continue to grow and be quite a community hub here.”
