Just one player from the province of Saskatchewan was taken in the 2019 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft between June 3 and 5.

That player is Logan Hofmann, a young pitcher from Muenster who has spent the last two seasons playing for the Colby Community College Trojans in the Junior College ranks. Hofmann said he went to a workout with the St. Louis Cardinals organization, the team that drafted him, and knew there was a possibility of being chosen.

“I had a feeling that it could happen, or it couldn’t happen,” Hofmann said. “So I was kind of on edge all day I guess. It was pretty nerve racking but it did happen, and I’m very excited.

It ended up being in the 35th round of the draft on June 5, and Hofmann said he was with his family when he found out the Cardinals selected him.

“My dad said ‘You just got drafted’, and I said ‘What? it’s not on my phone yet’, because we were both following on my phone,” Hofmann said. “I thought he was joking, but all of a sudden it was on there, and we were all screaming and yelling.”

Hofmann said it’s been a crazy few days, from being drafted, to then almost immediately heading out to Massachusetts to get ready for summer ball, he said there hasn’t been much time to think about what his next step is. The young pitcher is committed to Northwestern State University in Louisiana for next season, meaning if he doesn’t sign a contract with the Cardinals, he’ll continue his college baseball career there.

Hofmann has been a pitcher for a while, but also played a few other positions through the years. However, pitching has been his thing for his couple of seasons at Colby C.C.

“Growing up I wanted to be like Derek Jeter, I wore number two, so I wanted to be a shortstop,” Hofmann told northeastNOW. “Then eventually when I went to college, it was my first day of junior college actually, I was supposed to pitch and catch. Then the first day I get there, my coach says ‘Yeah, you’re just going to be pitching now’ and I guess it’s been the best thing that’s happened to me.”

Over his two seasons at Colby C.C., Hofmann has mainly been a starting pitcher, starting in 29 of his 35 career appearances. He sports a career record of 16-7 and an earned run average of 4.00. That number was at 3.11 for the 2018/2019 season. The number that sticks out the most however, is his strikeouts per nine innings (K/9). The stat is a way to evaluate a pitcher’s ability to strikeout batters. For Hofmann, his K/9 is 11.81 for his career, highlighted by a 12.85 K/9 in 2018/2019. His total strikeouts (128) were fourth in Division One of the Junior Circut.

For Hofmann, what makes him the player, and person he is, it’s work ethic.

“Just go out there and be the hardest working kid no matter what I’m doing,” he said. “Whether it’s at school, helping someone with homework, in the weight room, at practice, whatever I’m doing, just be the hardest working kid. And when I’m on the mound, just attack guys with all four pitches, throw strikes, and just find a way to get guys out is kind of my motto I guess.”‘
