Construction on Co-operative Place in Wynyard nears completion

Construction is almost complete on the new recreation complex in Wynyard.

According to the town’s Chief Administrative Officer Jason Chorneyko, things are moving along pretty well.

“It’s actually been pretty smooth,” he said. “For the size of the project, there have been, really, very few hiccups along the way.”

However, there has been a bit of a holdup on some mechanical, as well as some electrical, but Chorneyko said they hope that part will be nearly finished by the middle of July when they hope to have a substantial completion tour.

Chorneyko also said the rink will be complete sometime in August, and will be officially open in October.

When it comes to finances, there is still about 25 per cent left to fundraise according to Chorneyko. A major donation was made to the $10 million project earlier in the year as the Wynyard Co-op donated $400,000 for the naming rights to the area, calling it Co-operative place. Chorneyko said they also received a donation from a company to sponsor the canteen. There has also been a donation from a farming company to provide the coffee cups for the arena.

Chorneyko said the remaining funds will likely be paid off over time. He said when the project was approved, they knew there needed to be some planning for financing, due to the lack of grants coming to Wynyard from the provincial government.

“We have a $250 base tax that goes on basically almost every property in town,” Chorneyko told northeastNOW. “And that’s what is being used to help finance the project.”

Chorneyko added they are excited for the complex to be open.

“It looks great,” he said. “It’s not complete, but it really is going to be a fantastic facility.”
