Nipawin back in Communities in Bloom competition

Jul 30, 2019 | 5:36 PM

After over a decade of being absent in the Saskatchewan Communities in Bloom (CiB) competition, the Town of Nipawin has thrown its hat back in the race.

Nipawin has history in the CiB competition. It received the highest grade of five blooms in 2003 and competed again for the next two years.

Chelsea Carrigan, Nipawin’s director of parks and recreation, works with the Nipawin CiB committee and said while they’d love to win the category they’re competing in (up to 5,000 population), their main focus is getting back to the standard they set nearly 15 years ago.

“Our goal is to get Nipaiwn back into the CiB competition and progress through the years to get a five-bloom rating again,” Carrigan said. “Right now we’re just opening up Nipawin to CiB this year and seeing how it goes this year. Next year I hope we have a larger committee so we can go further and do even better.”

CiB judges grade communities up to 1,000 points based on categories such as environmental action, floral displays, heritage conservation, landscape, urban forestry, and tidiness. Carrigan said the town is looking clean in all aspects, although Nipawin CiB asks residents and businesses ensure their properties are clean, even if they’re under construction or vacant.

“We’re hoping that all of our businesses and residents are aware that the judges are coming next week and help us in making sure their grass is cut, weeds are picked, and garbage is cleaned up, so the judges can see how gorgeous Nipawin is and the sense of pride here,” she said.

“There are definitely some unsightly properties in our area that they will notice, but they are maybe under construction or vacant. We’re hoping any business or home owners that do own any properties that aren’t being used right now will help us tidy them up to make them more presentable.”

The provincial CiB judges will be in Nipawin on Wednesday, Aug. 7 and Thursday, Aug. 8.

Nipawin residents will have a chance to welcome the judges at town square on First Ave. E on Aug. 7 at 3 p.m.
