NEOSS hosting trauma-informed training sessions in the northeast

North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) is organizing three full-day trauma-informed training sessions next week.

The events are being held Oct. 16 and 18 at the Affinity Room in the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort, and Oct. 17 at the Generation Centre in Nipawin.

“[Trauma-informed training is] a new way of working with people that are at risk of being re-traumatized in their communities and by other organizations that they work with,” NEOSS Executive Director Louise Schweitzer said. “It gives them a knowledge and understanding about the impact of trauma and how it can get in the way of people being able to work and get effective care and support.”

Schweitzer said professionals will be training people on how to work with traumatized individuals in a healthy way, and not re-traumatize them with the service they are trying to provide.

“It’s pretty exciting to do this and bring it to the northeast so we can all go forward as a trauma-informed group of individuals and organizations to assist the clients that we serve,” Schweitzer said.

The vicarious trauma suffered by workers at organizations like NEOSS will also be covered in the training.

“Taking care of ourselves and the self-care pieces that we who hear the trauma, witness the trauma from our clients every day, how we can take care of ourselves to keep ourselves healthy as well,” Schweitzer said.

The training is open to all NEOSS staff and the community as a whole.

Schweitzer explained how the idea for trauma-informed training came about.

“It was something that was brought forward through some of our very learned staff that said ‘you know what, there is this training out there that I think would be very beneficial,'” said Schweitzer. “We as an organization looked into it and agreed with the staff member that brought it forward and looked at bringing it into our community.”

She said the community has been very supportive of the event, and they all want to work together in a more collaborative and healthy way.

The registration fee for each session is $100, which covers lunch, refreshments, the course material, and the certificate.

Schweitzer said there are just a few spots open on each day, and to register call the NEOSS office at (306) 752-9464.
