Strong second period propels Mustangs to victory over Bruins
It didn’t start how they wanted, but the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Estevan Bruins on Friday, Oct. 18 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action as the Mustangs opened their southern road swing.
The bus legs may have gotten to Melfort early on as just 22 seconds in, a Mustang turnover led to Isaiah Thomas notching his fifth of the year. Melfort started to turn it on a bit more in the period, but Estevan got another gift later in the frame off another Mustang turnover when Jayden Davis scored to make it 2-0.
“I thought our defensive gaps, we didn’t turn a lot of pucks over, we kind of gave up the zone easily,” Head Coach Trevor Blevins said. “As indicated in our two goals, we were back in front of the net. Also, our puck management in our own zone was soft, there’s no other way to describe it.
But it was a heck of a response in the second, we were really aggresive, we had the motors going for sure, and I thought we were really physical and hard and did a good job of addressing those two things after the first period.”
