Mustangs defeat Klippers

Mustangs down Klippers in teams lone game of the week

The Melfort Mustangs only played one game this week in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

On Saturday, the Mustangs defeated the Kindersley Klippers 4-1 at the Northern Lights Palace.

Things started quick for the Mustangs as Colton Schell notched his fourth of the season just five minutes in off a tip in front of the net. The 19-year-old forward said it was a goal the team needed.

“We always want to be the first one on the scoreboard,” Schell said. “I think it was a big goal for our group no matter who scored it.”

Schell’s linemate Zach Anderson scored a shorthanded goal with less than two minutes to play in the frame to give Melfort the 2-0 lead after one period.

In the second period, a Schell shot pinballed around the front of the net before finding Alex Rondeau in front as he tucked it into the net to make it 3-0.

Kindersley got one back with about four minutes to play in the third as Jaxon Georget scored his third of the year. Adam Nobes then threw one into an empty Kindersley net to make it a 4-1 final in favour of the hometown Mustangs. The line of Schell, Anderson, and captain Tyson Meyers led the way with a combined five points. Schell said that trio is playing some very good hockey right now.

“All three of us click together and we know where each other are on the ice most of the time,” he said. “So it’s easy to play with those two.”

Melfort now gets back into a tie with Flin Flon for first in the Sherwood Division with 33 points. The Mustangs host the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Wednesday.
