Warm, wet start to the week will give way to cooler conditions

The warm weekend weather has continued into Monday, and wet, sloppy roads are the norm as the temperature remains above freezing.

Rain will fall on-and-off throughout the day in the northeast, and Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang said the wet highways could turn slippery as the temperatures drop overnight.

“With the temperatures above freezing now and falling, particularly over the next few days we’re looking for temperatures below freezing. We do expect those roads to ice up with that melting snow and the little bit of rain that we’ve had,” Lang said.

She said it’s important to remember your winter driving skills if the icy roads materialize over the next 24 hours.

“Especially again with that freezing and re-freezing that we have when there’s melting and thawing and it freezes again at night,” Lang said. “Be aware of that especially when you’re heading out in the morning, roads may look wet but they actually may be icy instead.”

She recommended checking the Highway Hotline to keep on top of road conditions.

Lang said the northeast should stay around 4 Celsius today before it cools off slightly for a couple of days, and Environment Canada is forecasting high temperatures near or above the freezing mark again later in the work week.

“Normals for this time of year – meaning 30-year averages – are highs around -6 C and lows around -14 C, so we know it can be a lot colder than it is. I think we should just kind of enjoy it for what it is because we know that there’s lots more cold weather to come,” Lang said.

After today, the forecast is for mainly sunny conditions throughout the week, but Lang said that can change with warmer conditions.

“We find that the models aren’t so good at forecasting some of the low cloud,” she said.

She added if the weather flows from the North, low cloud can form from the lakes and foggy conditions can also materialize.
