‘I’m a small piece of the puzzle’: Blevins becomes winningest Head Coach in Mustangs history

Dec 11, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Trevor Blevins is on top of the Melfort Mustangs coaching mountain.

With the Mustangs 4-3 shootout win on Tuesday, Dec. 10, Blevins won his 212th game as Head Coach of the Melfort Mustangs, the most in franchise history.

“It’s always nice to hit milestones or do those things personally,” Blevins said. “But people that know me, it’s about the team here right now and we’re excited about the win today and we’re going to set it up for the weekend.”

The coach at the top of the list before Blevins hit 212 wins, was Darrell Mann, who coached the Mustangs in the 2000s, a time where Blevins was an assistant for a bit of time. Blevins was then hired as the head coach of the team, mid-season, in December of 2013. He said he remembers his first game as head coach as it was a special night for him. The Mustangs were honouring the Melfort TM’s that night (a former senior team in the area), and his now-late father dropped the puck that night.

The rest of that season, Blevins ultimately led the Mustangs to a Sherwood Division title. They would end up falling to the Humboldt Broncos in round one of the playoffs. Then, with a full season as Head Coach in the 2014/2015 season Blevins took the Mustangs to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League final, helping them win their first championship since he was a player. The Mustangs went back to the finals the next season, winning the championship again.

“I’m a small piece of the puzzle, really,” Blevins told northeastNOW. “And everybody that played and worked hard behind the scenes too, the board of directors, volunteers. To bring some success to the franchise all the way through, it’s very appreciated, and hopefully there’s many more wins to come.”

When asked what makes him such a good coach, Blevins said he just wants to make players better every day.

“I always say I use a bottom up approach,” he said. “Try and work on each individual as best as we can, to improve their skills and their play, and typically that leads to team success.”

On top of his two SJHL championships, Blevins also made the final again this past season. Under Blevins, the lowest the team has ever finished is 10th place in the 2016/2017 season where they lost to Notre Dame in the survivor series. Outside of that, the team has never finished lower than a tie for third overall, or fourth in playoff positioning. Blevins said with all the success already, he just wants to keep getting better.

“Just take it day by day and be as succesful as you can be,” he said. “Put in the work and have a good attitude and that’s something that we strive for here everyday.”

Blevins has also had a few Assistant Coaches under him during his time with the Mustangs, most recently Trevor Logan who currently stands beside Blevins on the bench. Logan said he continues to learn from Blevins, just a few months into his first season.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for me to learn from a guy with so much experience,” Logan said. “And not even the experience, but knowing what it takes to win in this league, and how to get players motivated and get going and stuff. So it’s been a pleasure for me to come on this year and learn from him, and congratulations to him, that’s a big feat.”

Blevins thanked everyone involved in helping the team be so successful. He also thanked his family who continues to support him through his time being a head coach.
