Mayor Jellicoe discusses 2019 and what’s to come in 2020

Businesses emerged and events ran through the Town of Tisdale in 2019.

While annual occurrences such as the Tisdale Rambler Rodeo and Trade Fair and Rockin’ the Square took place once more, the town welcomed three of the best Midget AAA hockey teams in Western Canada during the 2019 Telus Cup Western Regionals tournament.

For the commercial side, Tisdale saw The Spot move into their second fulltime restaurant and welcomed back Fields department store to the town. The department store moved into the location of the old Beeland Co-op Food Store after they closed operations following the sale and demolition of Tisdale Mall.

Of all that transpired in 2019, Mayor Al Jellicoe said the upgrades and expansions to Tisdale’s sewer lift station was a major milestone.

“We were getting close to capacity,” Jellicoe told northeastNOW. “This allows us now to push for expansion of residences and commercial businesses. Nobody will notice any difference, but as we continue to grow, we’ll grow.”

Town administration saw a change in position when Greg McShannock was named as Tisdale’s new economic development officer (EDO) in December, following the departure of Sean Wallace in March. Jellicoe expects the EDO to be busy in 2020 and beyond, with projects such as the regional landfill expansion, water land replacement, and painting programs.

“There are a lot of little projects with potential and hopefully everything works out,” he said. “The big item on my list is composting. I think there is a desire from residents to do that. We do it on a small scale to a very large scale.

“It’d be nice to get a few more commercial businesses and more people moving into town. We’re set up for growth and it’s taken a couple of years to get ready for that. I’m just hoping 2020 turns into a very productive year for the Town of Tisdale.”
