Melfort Museum hosting event to discuss history of trains in the area

Feb 4, 2020 | 10:11 AM

Melfort has a long, storied history when it comes to trains, and that will be on display Wednesday.

The Melfort Museum is hosting the Coffee and Conversation: History of Trains event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Curator Gailmarie Anderson told northeastNOW it’s all part of celebrating Saskatchewan Archives Week, which runs from Feb. 2 to 8.

“Not long ago, taking the train say from Fairy Glen to Melfort, people did it. They went into Saskatoon, they brought their livestock in to the Melfort Exhibition on the train,” Anderson said. In the early days it was Canadian Northern railways, then Canadian National, and now Canadian Pacific Railway.

Anderson said the original settlement in this area was located at Stoney Creek, east of the current city. The train’s arrival in 1903 and 1904 in Melfort’s current location led to the settlement’s movement as well.

She said she hopes to see people learn more and share about their experiences with trains in the region.

“People have their stories and we want to hear them,” Anderson said.

Museum researcher Alan Porter has also unearthed information about the history of trains in Melfort which he will present at the event.
