Representatives from the North Central Health Care Foundation presented Lane Fedoruk of Melfort with a $12,585 cheque on Tuesday, March 3 after he won its progressive 50/50 lottery.

The lottery was used as a fundraiser for the Melfort Heliport project, and as a result, another $12,585 is going to the NCHCF for the project at the Melfort Hospital.

Fedoruk said he was in Winnipeg when he found out he was the winner.

“You always buy tickets and support all your local fundraisers and community programs that are going on,” he said. “But never won before, never really expect to, but I guess if you buy a ticket you have a chance.”

He said when he read the email on Sunday, March 1 saying he won, he had to get his wife to read it over and make sure he was seeing it right. Fedoruk said he almost forgot about buying a ticket.

Fedoruk, who lives in Melfort, said supporting the community is very important to him.

“We’re proud to be part of this community and support all the activities involving minor sports, or with healthcare or education,” Fedoruk told northeastNOW. “We’ve always done that.”

As for what Fedoruk plans to do with his winnings that’s still to be decided. He said there are no concrete plans yet, but some of his children are getting married soon, so a nice wedding gift could be on the list, or even a trip for him and his wife.

Meanwhile, fundraising for the Heliport Project continues to move forward. Fedoruk said the project will be a good addition for the area.

It willl “be nice to know that you have something in the northeast area that’s closer for people, able to get them to Saskatoon or Regina for an emergency. That, I think may save somebody’s life, and we know STARS has done that already in a lot of instances,” he said. “I think it’s a great thing to support.”
