Highway 5 Improvements

Phase one of Highway 5 construction complete for winter season

Highway 5 construction between Humboldt and Saskatoon is complete for the season and will begin again in the spring.

Phase one of the multi-year project saw 10 kilometres of widening and sightline improvements from the Old 27 Road to Blucher Road with the exception of about three kilometres that has a temporary, narrow surface for the winter.

Steve Shaheen with the Department of Highways and Infrastructure said phase two includes the 30 kilometre stretch from Blucher Road to Highway 2.

“That project is scheduled to begin next year so for the next few years we are going to see a lot of construction continuing on that highway,” Shaheen said. “The end game is that it is going to be a much better, safer highway for travellers.”

The contractor will be spreading gravel along the shoulder to cover-up the upgrade because it will become slick when wet and highway speed will remain 100 km/h.

“There will be warning signs because the road will be narrow and there will be some drop-offs because this is a temporary surface until the top lift of pavement in next year,” Shaheen said.

Maintenance crews will be checking on the road throughout the winter to ensure it is safe for motorists.

Delays of more than 30 minutes were experienced by motorists on Highway 5 over the construction season. Detour options included taking Highway 41, 27 or Highway 2 to 16 to Saskatoon.
