Mustangs Offensive Outburst

Mustangs stay perfect with offensive outburst against Bombers

Nov 11, 2020 | 11:18 AM

The Melfort Mustangs remained perfect on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action as they defeated the Flin Flon Bombers.

The Mustangs hung a snowman on the Bombers in this win with and 8-3 win, fitting, considering it was a massive snowfall that canceled their game on Saturday, Nov. 7.

On the ice, Melfort got things going early, and didn’t look back. Ben Tkachuk notched a powerplay goal around the five minute mark in the first period, before getting another less than ten minutes later, this time shorthanded. Marco Lopez and Tye Scherger added goals 22 seconds apart to cap off a scorching hot first period for the visiting Mustangs.

Zach Huber scored for Flin Flon in the second, but Coletyn Boyarski matched him just over 12 minutes after and things sat at 5-1 after two.

Things got interesting in the third period. However, before that, Boyarski scored his second of the night and the Bombers got goals from Matt Raymond and Huber to make it a 6-3 hockey game. Then, just over the halfway point of the period, Mustang netminder Steven Bacovsky gloved down a puck and was subsequently whacked, or at least that what it appeared to be. That drew a crowd and ultimately each player grabbed a partner, including Bacovsky who ended up dropping the gloves with one of the Bombers, but only ended up with four minutes in penalties, while a number of his teammates were kicked from the game for their fights.

After all the carnage was cleared, the Mustangs ended up with a powerplay, and they capitalized as Vinny Prospal added salt to the wound, making it 7-3. Prospal added another powerplay marker just minutes later to add the cherry on top to the Mustangs offensive picasso.

Bacovsky stopped 39 of 42 shots he faced, notching his first win in net as a Mustang. Ethan Regnier also added three assists for Melfort in the win.

Melfort’s next action will be on Friday, Nov. 13 as they head to Nipawin to take on the Hawks. It’s a game you can catch on Saskatchewan’s Beach Radio and beachradiosk.ca.
