Nipawin Fire responds to two Saturday structure fires

Apr 19, 2021 | 3:39 PM

The Nipawin Fire Department was busy on Saturday, April 17 with a pair of structure fires.

The first was west of White Fox on Saturday morning where an outbuilding that was being used as a dog kennel was fully engulfed. Crews were able to control the blaze and make sure it did not get to any surrounding buildings, or the nearby forest area.

Later in the day, crews were then called to a barn fire northwest of Love. The building was fully engulfed and it was threatening some nearby propane tanks and grain bins. Crews were able to keep the fire from getting to the propane or grain bins, but the fire did run around the yard a bit.

Both buildings were a complete loss, according to Nipawin Fire Chief Dave Balding.

“There was no loss of life or any harm to humans or animals at either event,” he said.

Balding said his crews did a great job of handling both scenarios.

Meanwhile, with the burning season underway, Balding said it’s crucial to never leave a fire unattended.

“It’s incredibly important to make sure that you manage your burn piles, or burn barrels,” Balding said. “They can easily send sparks to adjoining buildings and cause this kind of incident.”
