Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Melfort Arts Council has taken steps to regroup and rebuild. The rebuild really got underway in the fall of 2020 and has included a new logo, new board, and new vision and mission.

Arts Council Chair Joanne Bolen told northeastNOW they are excited to unveil their new logo which has a couple of meanings behind it.

“We wanted it round to encompass our tag line of arts, community, connection,” Bolen said. “We also wanted our lettering of M.A.C in it and then added color to make it more welcoming.”

Rebuilding amidst the pandemic was a bit of a struggle with not being able to meet face-to-face but also provided an opportunity to put more focus on the changes and then to relaunch this spring.

A new board is part of the rebuild which is another very exciting part for the council. Joining Bolen on the board of directors is Laurel Korbo who is the vice-chair, Shannon Elder as treasurer, Brenda Mellon is the secretary and visual arts chair, and the
new performing arts chair is Darlene Tuleta Koenders.

“With the new board and a strong base of volunteers, we will continue to provide the Melfort area with live music, theatre performances, visual art exhibitions, workshops, and special events,” Bolen said.

A paper format community survey is now being dispersed to local businesses that will help determine future arts council activities through public input. The survey is also now available on the Melfort Arts Council website.

There will also be an artist goody prize as an incentive for the public to fill out the survey which also acts as a entry into the raffle draw. The draw will be made June 1 to give ample time for the feedback surveys to be completed.

The council already has a few key things in mind for the future according to Bolen.

“We want to start providing an annual art adjudication, and we want to provide educational workshops for professional development, for visual and performing,” Bolen said.

Another big project the council would like to take on is creating a directory for local art classes, music classes, workshops, guilds, and clubs that relate to the arts.

A new art exhibit was added to the Sherven-Smith Art Gallery at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort called “The Flower may not Look like the Roots.” The show features seven different artists using a wide variety of media including photography, clay, drawing, video, and textile and will be on display until May 23.
