Town of Nipawin excited to receive funding for upgrades at Jubilee Arena

Nipawin’s Jubilee Arena is getting a facelift thanks to some funding from the provincial and federal governments.

A total of 55 infrastructure projects were announced on Thursday, May 6 in Saskatchewan, including for the Town of Nipawin.

Nipawin has received $1,227,198 combined from the province and the feds for their upgrades at Jubilee. The town will need to contribute just over $446,000. The project will include adding four new dressing rooms to Jubilee Arena that include washrooms and showers, as well as adding a new entrance way to the arena that is more accessible for all patrons.

Director of parks and recreation Chelsea Corrigan said it’s a project that the facility needs.

“There are no dressing rooms or washrooms in the Jubilee Arena,” she said. “So all of these services have been, and always have been, accessed through the Centennial Arena.”

Corrigan added that with COVID-19 the need for more dressing rooms was magnified as there was requirements for social distancing that were difficult to adhere to with the current setup of the rink.

Mayor Rennie Harper said it’s an exciting project, and they weren’t entirely sure they were going to get the funding this time around.

“Some excitement for the young people, some excitement for the community because it’s something that we’ve been looking for for a while,” Harper told northeastNOW. “And of course knowing that alone, we would have never been able to do this for quite some time.”

Corrigan said hopefully construction will begin during the spring of 2022.
