‘It’ll make quite a difference’: Melfort’s football field gets irrigation system

Jul 13, 2021 | 1:28 PM

Melfort’s football field has gotten an underground facelift.

An irrigation system has recently been added to the field at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate and is now in operation. The field is used by the MUCC Comets football team, as well as Melfort Minor Football (MMF).

MUCC head coach David Rogers said the process to get an irrigation system has been in the works for a while and has now come to fruition thanks to grants, as well as a donation from Melfort Minor Football (MMF). He said MMF donated $25,000 to the North East School Division to help improve the high school team and the minor football program and a grant was received from the Riders Legacy Fund through Football Saskatchewan. There were also some seeds donated to help with the renewal of the grass on the field.

“It’ll make quite a difference,” Rogers told northeastNOW. “Hopefully that stuff will all get established by this fall and we’ll have a nice green field to play on.”

Previously, Mother Nature was relied on to water the football field, and with the recent dry summer, the field was deteriorating, according to Rogers.

“If you don’t have rain, the grass doesn’t grow,” he said. “So the nice thing is now with irrigation, you’re not having the rain, but you’re still going to have some grass growing and hopefully it’ll be in good shape come the fall.”
