Strong showing at hockey camp means difficult job for Bronco coaches ahead SJHL season

The Humboldt Broncos made some tough decisions on the weekend following the hockey camp.

Starting on Aug. 27 and wrapping up with the green versus gold game on Aug. 29, head coach Scott Barney said they have gotten the roster down to 30 players from the initial 70 who hit the ice.

The roster right now is a good mix of veterans and rookies with players returning to rink with good compete levels, conditioning, and a great attitude following 18 months off and dealing with the pandemic.

While the players made Barney’s job, and the rest of the coaching staff, that much harder, that’s what you want to see as a coach, he said.

“A lot of our younger guys are pushing some of our veterans for spots here and big credit to the young guys for putting that time in over the time off here. Now they’re making our decisions tough and obviously we’ll see more here with exhibition games as a level kind of picks up as the training goes along.”

Following the exhibition weekend with a home and home against Nipawin on Friday and Saturday, Barney said they will once again make some difficult decisions and get the roster down to 25 players.

Now it will be a matter of watching to see which veteran will be taking the bull by the horns and leading and which rookies will be pushing the older players for those value spots on the ice.

A couple hundred fans came to cheer on the players at the green and gold game. Barney hopes to see that fan support continue into what he hopes is a full SJHL season for the Broncos.
