Mustangs hoping stretch of home games help team back into win column

Oct 29, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Friday, Oct. 29 will mark the first of four straight home games for the Melfort Mustangs in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

The homestands might also be arriving at the perfect time for the Mustangs as they’ve lost their last three contests. Goalie Joel Favreau says some ‘home cooking’ will be nice to try and get back into a rhythm with the crowd with them as well. He added that while the team is in a bit of a skid, there’s no worry in the room.

“I don’t think there’s really a sense of panic though,” Favreau said. “I think we’re a pretty calm team, pretty confident in what we can do. I think we know going into the weekend we can steal these four points.”

The Weyburn Red Wings will be the team in Melfort’s way on Friday night, followed by a visit by the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday night.

Favreau started the year with a sparkling 5-0 record, but his record has dropped to 6-4, and his goals-against-average and save percentage aren’t where he’d like them to be. However, the 19-year-old said he feels like it’s just a few games, and moments that he’d like back.

He’s also turned into Melfort’s unquestioned number one goalie with the arrival of James Venne. Favreau said he’s comfortable with the role he’s been given now.

“It’s a little different dynamic than I’m used to, it’s probably the first year on a team since like U13 where I’ve actually been ‘the guy’,” he said. “So, it’s a little bit of a change for sure, but it’s something I’m up for.”

Puck drop for both nights is 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
