Melfort Legion to host Biennial Provincial Convention

For the first time in its history, the Melfort Legion will be the host of the Royal Canadian Legion, Biennial Provincial Convention, for the Saskatchewan Command.

The convention will mark the 51st of its kind and the first since before the pandemic.

The convention was originally supposed to happen last year, however, was postponed, due to the COVID situation.

“It’s quite an honour to host this type of event,” local legion chairman John Wade told northeastNOW.

Wade was instrumental in bringing the convention to Melfort, as he was the one to reach out after someone had pointed out they should apply after a similar district rally was in the city.

Over 100 delegates are expected to be in attendance, including guests from Ontario, the United States and even the Lieutenant Governor.

Wade added it’s pretty special to have such honourable and respected guests visit their home.

“It’s quite an honour and privilege to have all these high-ranking dignitaries. They are at most of the events and are good supporters of the Legion.”

The events started on Friday and runs until Monday, and will include public and non-public happenings.

A parade and cenotaph service are planned for Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. at the memorial gardens. They are both open to everyone, with the official opening beginning at 3 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Outside of that, there will be internal resolutions and elections, along with a barbecue and rib night.

Wade explained that legion-specific events can make a huge impact on their facilities.

“It brings in some funds for us and then we get to show off the facility and show people what we have done, so you get different ideas that exchange both ways.”

According to the Royal Canadian Legion, their mission is to “serve veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members, and their families, to promote remembrance and to serve their communities and their country.”
